Parwana

Recipes and Stories from an Afghan Kitchen

پروانه

Details

Parwana is a celebration of Afghan food, family and hospitality. Through more than 100 traditional recipes, Durkhanai Ayubi and her family share the flavours they carried with them from Afghanistan to Australia, alongside stories of migration, memory and belonging.

Inspired by the much-loved Adelaide restaurant of the same name, the book invites readers into a kitchen where recipes are inseparable from family history and culture.

The Book

Named after the Ayubi family's Adelaide restaurant, Parwana is both a cookbook and a family memoir. Each chapter explores the traditions behind Afghan cuisine, from fragrant rice dishes and slow-cooked stews to breads, pickles and sweets that have been passed between generations.

Interwoven with recipes are stories of exile, resilience and home, revealing how food preserves identity across borders and generations. More than a collection of recipes, Parwana offers an intimate portrait of Afghan culture through the rituals of cooking and sharing a meal.
