"I recently returned from a trip to my country of birth, Afghanistan. As a child, my parents would tell me stories of the luxurious life they lived in Kabul, the 'Paris of Central Asia', as it was once known.

I had done my reading – Kabul was a cosmopolitan city in the years leading up to the 1970s, prior to the Soviet invasion. I had also seen the evidence – old black and white photographs of my parents and their friends at parties, donned in the most sophisticated evening wear. They picnicked among natural landscapes unsurpassed in beauty."
